LTL Freight Class, Explained Without the Jargon

Freight class as density tiers — how to calculate yours, why carriers reclass and bill the difference, and how to avoid it.

Freight class is a number from 50 to 500 that every LTL shipment carries, and it is mostly a measure of density — pounds per cubic foot. Low class means dense freight that packs tightly and rates cheaply; high class means light, bulky freight that fills a trailer without paying for it. Calculate it before you quote and the number stops surprising you.

The calculation is arithmetic you can do with a tape measure and a calculator, and it's worth doing, because class multiplies everything else on the invoice. This is what it measures, how to compute yours, and why the terminal's machine gets the final word.

What freight class actually measures

Every LTL shipment in the U.S. gets a class from the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system — a number from 50 to 500. Think of it as a difficulty score for the carrier. Low numbers mean dense, durable, easy-to-stack freight: bricks, bolted machinery, canned goods. High numbers mean light, bulky, fragile, or awkward freight: lampshades, foam, assembled furniture, ping-pong tables.

The score has historically weighed four things: density (pounds per cubic foot), stowability (can other freight sit on or against it), handling (does it need special care), and liability (value, fragility, theft appeal). In practice, density does most of the work — and the system keeps moving further in that direction.

How class turns into dollars

LTL carriers publish base rates per hundred pounds (the "CWT rate") that scale with class. The higher the class, the more you pay per pound, because your freight takes up more trailer space per pound of revenue. The jumps are not gentle: moving from class 70 to class 150 on the same lane can nearly double the linehaul, and moving from 150 to 250 does it again. Distance, lane, and fuel all matter — but class is the multiplier sitting on top of everything.

That's why class disputes are worth real money in both directions. A shipper who overstates class donates margin to the carrier on every shipment. A shipper who understates it — deliberately or by guessing — gets corrected after pickup, at the carrier's number, plus an inspection fee.

The density math, with a worked example

Density is pounds per cubic foot, measured on the freight as it ships — pallet, packaging, overhang and all. The formula:

  • Cubic feet = (length × width × height, in inches) ÷ 1,728
  • Density = total weight in pounds ÷ cubic feet

Worked example: a machine strapped to a standard 48” × 40” pallet, standing 48” tall with packaging, weighing 350 lb all-in.

  • 48 × 40 × 48 = 92,160 cubic inches ÷ 1,728 = 53.3 cubic feet
  • 350 lb ÷ 53.3 ft³ = 6.6 lb per cubic foot

At 6.6 PCF, density-rated freight lands around class 150. Now watch what packaging does: crate the same machine into a 48” × 40” × 30” box and the cube drops to 33.3 ft³, density rises to 10.5 PCF, and the class falls to roughly 92.5–100 — a meaningfully cheaper shipment for the price of a shorter crate. Density is the one pricing input you partially control.

A rough ladder for orientation: 50+ PCF rates class 50; around 15 PCF, class 70; 8–10 PCF, class 100–110; 6–8 PCF, class 125–150; 4–6 PCF, class 175–200; below 2 PCF you're in class 300–500 territory, where air is the main cargo.

The 2025 shift: density is eating the rulebook

For decades, thousands of commodities carried fixed classes regardless of how they were packed — the NMFC book said "this item is class 85" and that was that. Starting with the NMFTA's 2025 docket changes, large swaths of those fixed-class items moved onto full density-based scales. If your product used to ride a favorable commodity class, its class may now float with how you package it — better for dense, well-packed freight, worse for light and bulky loads that had been sheltered by an old listing.

The practical takeaway isn't to memorize the book. It's that dimensions now matter as much as weight on nearly everything, and carriers have invested accordingly.

Why carriers reweigh — and why they usually win

Major LTL terminals run certified forklift scales and dimensioning machines that measure every pallet crossing the dock. When the measured density disagrees with the class on your bill of lading, the carrier issues a correction: new class, new rate, plus an inspection or reweigh fee. This isn't a scam; it's automation. The machine doesn't know or care what your quote said.

Disputing a correction is possible but uphill — you're arguing against a calibrated scale with a guess. The winning move is making the argument unnecessary:

  1. Measure after packaging, not before. The pallet adds height and 30–50 lb; overhang counts at its widest point.
  2. Round up honestly. A half inch of stretch wrap is still an inch on the dimensioner.
  3. Photograph the finished pallet with a tape measure visible. If a correction is wrong, this is your evidence; if it's right, you learned something cheap.
  4. Put the real numbers on the BOL. The bill of lading is the contract. A verbal "about 300 pounds" doesn't survive contact with a scale.

When freight class stops mattering

Class is an LTL concept — it exists because your pallet shares a trailer and someone must decide how to split the cost. Move the same freight on a dedicated vehicle and the class disappears from the math: a same-day run across Los Angeles or a dedicated SoCal route prices on the vehicle, the miles, and the time, not on pounds per cubic foot. For dense freight on long lanes, LTL usually still wins. For urgent, fragile, or bulky-but-local freight, skipping the classification game entirely is sometimes the cheaper path — and always the simpler one.

What freight class is a standard pallet?

There's no single answer — class follows density, not the pallet. A 48×40 pallet at 48” tall rates roughly class 60–70 at 800 lb, class 150 at 350 lb, and class 250 at 150 lb. Weigh and measure the finished pallet, run the density, then read the class.

Can I just guess a low class to get a cheaper quote?

You can, and the terminal dimensioner will correct it after pickup — at the carrier's tariff, plus an inspection fee, sometimes weeks later. Understating class doesn't save money; it converts a known price into a surprise invoice.

What's the difference between freight class and NMFC code?

The NMFC code identifies what the commodity is (a numbered listing in the classification book); the class is the 50–500 rating that listing carries, increasingly set by a density scale. A BOL ideally shows both.

Does freight class apply to same-day or dedicated shipments?

No. Class exists to price shared trailer space in LTL. Dedicated vehicles — same-day metro runs, hot shots, dedicated routes — price on distance, equipment, and time, which is one reason odd-shaped local freight often moves better outside the LTL network.

How do I find the density if my freight isn't rectangular?

Measure the smallest box that would contain it — greatest length, width, and height including packaging and pallet — and compute from that. Carriers dimension freight the same way: air inside your footprint counts as your freight.

Who is responsible if the class on the BOL is wrong?

The shipper. The carrier bills the party on the bill of lading, and brokers pass corrections through. That's why accurate dims and a photo at pickup are worth more than any dispute filed afterward.
