Standard Pallet Sizes: A Shipper's Reference
GMA 48x40 and the other common footprints, weight ratings, ISPM-15, and how pallet choice affects freight class.
The North American standard pallet is 48 x 40 inches — the GMA footprint, used for roughly a third of pallets in circulation. Europe's equivalent is the 1200 x 800 mm EUR/EPAL. Most other sizes exist to serve one industry: 48 x 48 for drums, 42 x 42 for telecom and paint, 36 x 36 for beverage.
Those dimensions set your freight bill. The footprint decides how many units fit a trailer, whether your load rates as standard or oddball, whether it overhangs (and gets crushed, and reclassed), and whether it can cross a border without fumigation paperwork. The North American standard: 48 x 40
The GMA pallet — 48 inches by 40 inches, from the Grocery Manufacturers Association spec — is the default unit of North American freight. Something like a third of all pallets in U.S. circulation are this footprint, and the entire ecosystem is tuned to it: trailer widths fit two across, dock equipment assumes it, racking is sold for it, and carriers price around it. Unless your freight has a specific reason to sit on something else, it ships on a 48x40.
The four-way entry version — forklift and pallet-jack access from all four sides — is what you want; two-way pallets limit how equipment can grab the load, which slows terminals and annoys drivers at exactly the moments you want neither.

Shipping internationally? Match the destination's ecosystem. A 48x40 wastes space in systems built around EUR pallets, and vice versa — and a container packed on the wrong footprint gives up whole rows of capacity.
Height: the dimension that prices the trailer
A bare pallet stands about 5–6 inches. What matters is loaded height: dry van interiors run roughly 108–110 inches, so two stacked 48-inch loads fit and two 60-inch loads don't. Carriers think in cube, and cube math shows up in your price three ways:
- Stackability. A load topped flat and marked stackable can carry another pallet; carriers price the space it gives back. A fragile pyramid marked non-stackable pays for the air above it.
- Density. Height feeds straight into pounds-per-cubic-foot, which drives freight class. The same 500 lb spread tall and loose classes worse than packed low and tight.
- Practical caps. Most LTL networks prefer loads under ~96 inches; past that you're into special handling territory.
Footprint and height also decide which truck can serve the delivery. A dry van floor sits about four feet off the ground, so a tall pallet that clears a dock fine may need entirely different equipment at an address without one — dock-high trailers versus liftgate box trucks covers which sites can take which.
Weight ratings: static vs. dynamic
Pallet load ratings come in two flavors, and the difference matters the moment a forklift lifts your freight:
- Static: what the pallet holds sitting still on flat ground — often 5,000+ lb for a decent wood GMA.
- Dynamic: what it holds while being lifted and moved — the number that counts, typically around half the static rating; a healthy wood 48x40 handles ~2,000–2,500 lb dynamic.
For most freight in the 150–1,500 lb range, any sound pallet is fine. Machinery and dense loads pushing a ton should ride newer, heavier-deck pallets — a pallet that cracks mid-lift is how "minor freight" becomes an incident report.
Materials: wood, plastic, presswood
Wood is the default: cheap (new ones run a few dollars to $15–25 market-typical; sound used ones often free from businesses that accumulate them), repairable, grippy, recyclable. Plastic costs several times more but lasts hundreds of trips, washes down, and suits closed loops, food, and pharma — for one-way freight it's usually money down the road. Presswood / molded pallets are light, nestable, and — usefully — exempt from international heat-treatment rules because the manufacturing process already sterilizes them.
Going international: ISPM-15
Wood packaging crossing borders must be treated against pests under ISPM-15 — look for the IPPC stamp (the wheat-stalk logo with a country code and HT for heat-treated) on the stringer. No stamp, and your shipment can be delayed, re-palletized at your expense, or refused at the border. Domestic freight doesn't care; export freight cares enormously. Presswood pallets and non-wood alternatives sidestep the rule entirely.
Reusing pallets: the thirty-second inspection
Free used pallets are genuinely fine for most freight — after a quick look. Reject any pallet with a cracked or missing stringer (the thick rails the forks enter), protruding nails, deck boards loose enough to shift underfoot, or visible rot and staining. A pallet that flexes when you stand on its center will flex worse under 800 lb on a liftgate. The one-line rule: if you wouldn't trust it lifted over your own foot, don't trust it with your freight — a fresh pallet costs less than any outcome of a failed one.
Overhang: the small sin with compound interest
Freight hanging past the pallet edge is the most common self-inflicted wound in palletized shipping. It gets bumped by every neighboring load and forklift pass; damage claims on overhanging freight are routinely denied as improper packaging; and the extra inches enlarge your dimensional footprint — a 52-inch-wide load on a 48x40 is billed as 52 inches, and may reclass. The two-minute pallet decision
- Default to a four-way 48x40 unless the freight or destination says otherwise.
- Bigger than the deck? Bigger pallet, zero overhang.
- Keep it low and tight; flat-top if stackable, and say so.
- Over ~1,500 lb on the deck? Fresh heavy-duty pallet, no cracked stringers.
- Crossing a border? IPPC-stamped or non-wood.
- Measure the loaded pallet — footprint and height — and quote with those numbers, not the catalog dimensions of what's on it.

Loaded height and weight distribution set the real ceiling. Once your count climbs toward those numbers, the pallet count where a full truckload beats LTL becomes the question worth pricing.
How much weight can a wood pallet hold?
A sound GMA wood pallet typically rates around 2,000–2,500 lb dynamic (being lifted and moved) and roughly double that static. Use the dynamic number for planning, and use a fresh heavy-deck pallet for machinery-class weights.
What does the ISPM-15 stamp mean and do I need it?
It certifies the wood was heat-treated against pests — required for wood packaging crossing international borders. Domestic-only freight doesn't need it; export freight without it risks delay, re-palletizing costs, or refusal.
Can my freight hang over the edge of the pallet?
It can, and it will cost you: overhang invites damage, gives carriers grounds to deny claims as improper packaging, and enlarges your billed dimensions. Size the pallet to the freight instead.
Does pallet choice affect my freight class?
Indirectly but really: footprint and loaded height set your cubic feet, cube sets density, and density drives class. A tighter, lower, no-overhang load on the right pallet is the cheapest version of the same freight.
