One question sorts every machine move: can the machine be skidded, rolled, and lifted by a pallet jack or forklift? If yes, it is freight, and a liftgate truck handles it. If it must be lifted from above, walked on rollers, or taken through a wall, you need riggers before you need a carrier. Nearly every expensive mistake starts with answering that wrong.

Factories have riggers on retainer and dock plates in the floor. A four-person shop has a CNC mill, a lease ending Friday, and a suspicion that "we'll figure it out with the forklift" is how machines get dropped. Thousands of small shops move machinery successfully every year — the failure modes are expensive but mostly avoidable. Here's the honest map: when you truly need riggers, when a liftgate truck and a pallet jack genuinely cover it, and the preparation that decides which kind of day you have.

Riggers or freight? The one question that sorts everything

The dividing line isn't weight alone — it's weight plus handling complexity:

  • Call riggers when a machine must be lifted rather than rolled: multi-ton equipment, anything requiring cranes, gantries, or machine skates on stairs, top-heavy machines with high centers of gravity, or placement tolerances measured in millimeters. Rigging is a licensed, insured specialty; a market-typical small-shop rigging job runs into four figures, and it's worth every dollar when the alternative is a tipped VMC.
  • Freight covers it when the machine (or its disassembled sections) can sit on a skid or pallet, weighs inside the 150–1,500 lb band per piece, and both ends have level ground access. That's a liftgate truck, a pallet jack, and a driver who moves heavy freight all day — the everyday shape of our heavy final-mile work.

Plenty of shop moves are a hybrid: riggers to get the big mill off its foundation and onto a skid, freight to carry it and the twenty pallets of tooling, benches, and stock that surround it.

Preparing a machine to travel

  1. Drain the fluids. Coolant, hydraulic oil, way oil, fuel. Fluids shift weight in transit, leak on freight below, and turn a routine move into a hazmat conversation. Drain, cap, and bag the lines.
  2. Secure or remove what moves. Lock spindles and axes at travel position, strap or remove counterweights per the manual, pull chuck jaws and loose tooling into their own boxes. The machine's manual usually has a transport section nobody has ever read — read it.
  3. Bolt to a skid. Lag-bolt the machine through its foundation holes to a hardwood skid rated past its weight, oriented so forks and pallet jacks approach from the machine's stable side. Blocking and banding beat gravity-plus-hope. The general craft is the same as any freight — our palletizing guide covers strapping and wrap — but machinery adds the bolts.
  4. Verify the real weight. Nameplate weight, manual weight, and "what the last owner said" disagree constantly. Guess low and the liftgate is over capacity at the destination curb. When in doubt, weigh or over-declare; honest weight is also what keeps the quote honest.
  5. Protect the precision surfaces. Way covers on, VCI paper or oil on bare iron, no straps bearing on ballscrews or sheet-metal guarding.

Check the destination before the truck leaves

Most machine-move disasters happen in the last thirty feet. Before moving day: measure every doorway and turn against the machine's largest dimension (with skid height added); confirm floor load capacity, especially on mezzanines and older slabs; check the approach — grade, gravel, overhead wires, gate widths; and know where the machine lands, because "we'll decide when it's here" costs by the minute. If the destination lacks a dock, say so at booking so a liftgate truck with a pallet jack shows up — the equipment mismatch, not the weight, is what strands machines on trucks.

Sequence the move around downtime, not distance

The cost of a shop move is measured in days the spindles don't turn, so plan backward from restart: finish and ship the last customer jobs before teardown begins; give teardown its own day (draining, skidding, and bagging always take longer than the plan says); move machines early in the day so unloading, placement, and leveling happen with hours to spare; and schedule recommissioning — leveling, re-tramming, warm-up cycles, a test part — as its own task rather than an afterthought. Shops that compress all of that into one heroic Saturday usually buy the machines a second move across the new floor. Insurance: read the cap before you load

Used machinery routinely carries low default liability — per-pound caps that turn an $8,000 mill into a few hundred dollars of protection. Can a liftgate truck really handle a CNC machine?

Within limits. Typical liftgates handle roughly up to 1,500–3,000 lb depending on the gate, for machines that are skidded, stable, and rollable with a pallet jack. Above the gate's rating, or for machines that must be lifted rather than rolled, it's rigging work — and a carrier should tell you that at quoting, not at the curb.

Do I have to drain coolant and oil before shipping a machine?

Yes. Fluids leak, shift the center of gravity, and can put the shipment into hazardous-goods territory. Drain and cap everything, bag the line ends, and note residual fluids to the carrier when quoting.

How much does it cost to move a machine across town?

Market calibration: a skidded machine in the 500–1,500 lb range moving within one metro commonly lands in the low-to-mid hundreds on shared freight, more on a dedicated same-day vehicle; full rigging jobs price separately and higher. Honest weight, dimensions, and access details at both ends are what keep the quote and the invoice the same number.

Should I disassemble a machine before moving it?

Follow the manual's transport section. Removing overhanging assemblies, counterweights, and sheet metal often turns an awkward lift into stable freight — but core alignment components should stay assembled unless the manufacturer says otherwise. What if my new space has no dock or forklift?

Say so at booking. A liftgate truck plus pallet jack handles level-ground delivery without any equipment on your side — the failure case is only ever the carrier not knowing. Measure doors and confirm floor capacity before the truck is loaded, not after.

Is my machine insured during the move?
